Tarps off on the Beach

Just when we think we ROTM couldn't get any more vintage, we have another classic rig. Simon in Victoria BC brings us his stunning 73 Land Rover Defender. With the removable top, this rig is suited for the trails, a safari, or just hanging out down by the beach to soak up the sun.

Give us a quick INTRO- who are you? Where do you live?

My name is Simon and I live in Victoria, BC. Grew up in the UK (hence the love of Land Rovers) before moving to Whistler in the 90’s.

Give us a quick overview of your rig.

1973 Land Rover Series 3. It has a hard top for the winter and goes topless in the summer. I am the second owner and it only has 66,000 miles. Originally purchased in Vancouver and lived on a farm before moving to Victoria. This vehicle is just like it was in 1973. No power steering and 0-60 in about 10 minutes. 2.25 litre four cylinder gas engine pushing out a whopping 74hp!

Tell us about any special modifications that make your rig stand out.

I needed to modify the tow hitch from the original European tow ball to a 2” receiver. A friend welded the receiver onto the tow plate and it works perfectly for the north Shore Rack.

What is the best road trip you’ve taken your rig on?

Being a 53 years old vehicle I mostly take the vehicle around the Victoria and Sooke area. Sometimes up to Maple Mountain near Crofton. For longer trips, the rack gets put on my 23 Toyota Tundra.

What would be your next dream road trip?

One day to load it up to the roof with gear and head up to Northern BC for some Mountain Biking and fly fishing. Just take my time and explore BC.

How long have you had your North Shore Rack?

I have had the rack for 7 years

In your travels, what is your favorite riding location/favorite trail?

I just love the trails on the Southern Island - Hartland, Thetis, Maple MTN.

Yes please!! Beer would have to be my preference though!

Country music is banned in the Land Rover! Indie, rock, 80’S and 90’s tunes.
